J'aime la France

People who know me from this board (and the now defunkt Tablewine site) know that I'm generally a fan of the California fruit-bomb styles, but I'm proud to say that my palate has evolved. From the big Cali Cabs, I started experimenting with the Meritage blends which naturally led me to Bordeaux. I find that the red Bordeaux are a little more food friendly than some of the big Cali blends. I'm still not a fan of Burgundy though - their earthy quality is still too reminiscent of barnyards for me! I guess I'll never be THAT evolved!

So, where do you line up on the age-old question: Bordoozey's or Big-gundians?

As I noted earlier, I am planted squarely in the Bordeaux camp.

Hi BromBordoo,
good to have another person here to understand my passion. :-)

concerning me talking about france being the one and only country,...I have to admit: you are right! That was not exactly what I meant to say. What I actually tried to say is that the French wines hold a special place in my heart (or mouth ;-) ). After enjoying French wine back home for a long time I finally made it to France and also fell in love with the country.
However, I also enjoy wines from all other countries. I also think there are outstanding wines in Spain, Germany, Austria and many other countries. Just recently I tried a South African wine that was simply outstanding.

What I meant is not that I don't enjoy drinking wines from other areas, but if I had to choose 1 country and could only drink wine from there for the rest of my life it would be France. It is just my favourite wine country.

Hope I could clarify that!

Glad to have another Francoenophile on the board - I think you will find we are the distinct minority.

If I have a favorite (and I am not all that sure I do) it only would be the broad category of Medoc reds. I recently have been able to afford white Burgundies, and they are real head turners too. Big Syrahs from the Rhone have their place, Bandol from Provence, the perfumed whites of Alsace...

I have to say though, I find that your statement "I am a true wine lover and to me France is the one and only wine country." contradictory and misguided.

How can you (or anyone) be a true wine lover while dismissing every wine producing country in the world save one? Just in production of one style of wine you reject Tokaji, Sherry, Portos and Madeira, Vin Santo and Marsala, Oz Muscats and tawnies, and the home of the greatest white wines in the world, Alsace's neighbor Germany?

It's impossible.

I am a true wine lover and to me France is the one and only wine country.

I once travelled to Bordeaux and the Loire Vally, which not only produce the greatest wines but which are full of natural beauty. And in a recent article I even read that the French wine is healthy. They explained this thought by saying that the French are one of the healthiest people in the world despite of an unhealthy lifestyle and despite of drinking A LOT of wine. I guess this means we all should drink wine with each meal ;-)

Anyone else who thinks the best wines are from France?

What is your favourite French wine?

It's too late to help out on slider's friends shopping trip , but it appears that some advice for future reference would not be out of place.

It is usually best to buy Zinfandel, especially California Zinfandel in the U.S. Likewise, France is, if not the last place I would seek out Tempranillo based wines, certainly far from the first. I would go to Spain for these.

I also would go to Spain if I was looking for Garnacha. In France, one would be asking for a Grenache and likely getting a Rhone wine.

They make some nice Pinot Noirs in France I hear.

Let's play the game - certainly to fit slider's Cab preference he would want to seek out a Bordeaux, but Bordeaux produces hundreds of wines. What kind(s) of Bordeaux would slider do best to seek out to fit his taste?

I have many suggestions, but first I would need to know a bit about what kind of wine you enjoy. First off, Red or White? Secondly, what type of grape do you normally prefer; Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, etc.
