Montgras Carmenere Reserva

Carmeneres is another terrific Bordeaux-SA "transplantation" story. I hear almost nothing but good things about Chilean versions of this not quite lost varietal.

Montgras Carmenere Reserva

I fell in love with Carmeneres last fall and the love affair continues because I keep stumbling across these incredibly delicious and affordable Chilean wines on restaurant wine lists and at my favorite local wine store. My newest favorite is from Montgras. The Reserva is deep, with concentrated flavors of cocoa and dark fruit with a smooth and velvety texture. The first time I tried it was at our favorite local restaurant (Table Mountain Inn, Golden Colorado). I had it with the crab-stuffed mushrooms ("...serrano chile, lime and crab baked in jumbo mushroom caps with bacon mornay sauce..."). I was pleasantly surprised that the wine really showed well against the complex flavors of the appetizer. Here's my favorite kind of wine, one that tastes great alone and even better with food. I picked up a couple of bottles on sale for $11.99 at my local wine store.

La Yunta Tinto

Friday night is usually pizza night at my house. Last Friday was no exception, so while the pie was bubbling away in the oven, I checked out my wine closet for something "different." I came across a bottle of La Yunta Tinto, an Argentinian blend of Cabernet, Malbec, and Bonarda (and probably a couple of other things I can't remember). It turned out to be a great choice - full of dark ripe plums, a bit of mocha and something a bit spicy, with a long, smooth finish. This is an easy-drinking red wine that gives you a little bit to think about. In other words, it's got some decent complexity and it's a bargain at $10/bottle. While it was very nice with the pizza, I think it would stand very nicely with something really beefy, too.

Colome

Donald Hess' (Hess Collection) project in Argentina is producing some amazing wines. I tasted the Colome Malbec (2005 I believe) last night and it was one of the best Malbecs I have had. Soft tannins, complex and at about $25, I think it's a bargain.

I'm glad you liked it, CiK. It's always fun to broaden our wine horizons. Gives us so many more options for pairings and sharing....

After much searching I finally managed to get my hands on a bottle of Carmenere. Unfortunately I was unable to find a "pure" bottle and this one was backed with a small amount of Merlot. I found it delicious! It wasn't as full bodied as I generally care for, but the drink-ability was astounding. I'd definitely put this grape in the same category as Malbec: up and coming, and at the moment very reasonably priced. Thanks for the tip Kimisu.

I agree with Kim, a Cabernet drinker can most likely enjoy this style of wine. It's possible that I had tried Concho y Toro's Carmenere too. Just don't remember! lol I do remember the Calina because it was the first ever Carmenere I had. I have one or two in the cellar and I beleive on of them is labeled Ona.

Hey CabIsKing - let us know what you think. I would think that the style of wine would appeal to someone who likes Cabs.

Elron - I also like the Calina Reserve! That was the second Carmenere I tried.
