Hi KarIC, You can try this one : Merlot Petit Verdot from Julien SCHAAL made in Hemel an Aard valleyr, Hermanus (web site : vins-schaal.com). It's a young French winemaker who works with Newton Johnson winery.

When you say this wine was a 'good value compared to CA Cabs at that price', what do you mean?

Do you mean compared to good CA Cabs at that price? Wines that you thought gave good value but now don't because of this wine?

I'm always confused by the idea of 'valuable' wines, that is to say expensive wines, giving good value.

I had the chance to try this wine recently and was really happy with it. It's one of the few South African wines I've tasted and it was head and shoulders above the others I've tried.

I'd say it was a good value at $32 US compared to many Cali Cabs in that price range.

Have yet to sample the Goats do Roam however I did open a bottle of a 2003 Porcupine Ridge Shiraz from SA. A full bodied Syrah with big Syrah charecteristics of spice and pepper, I thought I tasted figs but my friednd guessed blueberries. (Who knows) The wine has a good balance and an extended finish. Overall I liked it and got it for $12.50. A nice big South African Syrah you can sample.

Sounds like a winery with a great sense of humor. I'm going to look at the Goats do roam website and buy a bottle or two to try. Thanks Kimisu and Bowser for the data.

Check out their website: www.goatsdoroam.com. they have a Goats do Roam (Cotes du Rhone) and a Bored Doe (uh-um, a Bordeaux). All fairly inexpensive and big and bold. They like to blend their wines instead of selling varietals, something I very much appreciate in this age of CabSauvs, Merlots, Shiraz etc. etc. I also like the Goats do Roam red and at $12Can it's a steal.
