Took a chance and purchased an inexpensive bottle of Taylor Golden Sherry. I guess I did okay as she called today to say she has been enjoying it on these very cold evenings. Thank you for your ideas.

First you have to find out what type of sherry she enjoys on cold evenings. Many people like fino dry sherry, while others prefer the mush sweeter cream sherry or unctuous Pedro Ximeniz. Then of course there are amontillado and olorosa in between.

Emilio Lustau is a very highly regarded maker of the full range of sherry styles whose wines have a pretty fair distribution. People still ask for Harvey's Bristol Cream by name and this is available almost everywhere. For fino or amontillado sherries look for Gonzalez Byass. Sandeman's is another long-time reputable maker.

Again, be sure to find out the style she prefers. The difference between a fino and a cream sherry is the difference between night and day.

I have an aunt who is turning 73 at the end of the month and remembered that she will once in a while have a glass of sherry on these cold evenings. As I am not a sherry drinker and have never bought it before I was hoping for some help. I want it be decent tasting and don't want to pay more than $25. Help time is running out.

Can you recommend a good port

I purchased a bottle of Clocktower port and found it to be rich drinking on these cold autumn nights. I normally don't buy or drink ports but am slowly becoming a fan. A friend recommended the Brown Brothers Very old Port, but I don't know the price or quality yet. I would like to try it next but before I buy it I wanted other recommendations of all price range ports.
