Palate change? Mood? I use to like light beers; now, the heavier the better. I am also in to the heavier wines.

This is ridiculous. After a 2 or 3 year self-imposed exile from Spanish wines, I'm finding these fantastic gems stashed away in my cellar collecting dust! I didn't think I liked Grenache. Maybe I still don't, but apparently I DO like it when it's blended with other grapes. Take this Grenache/Tempranillo blend from Rioja. A nice light-to-medium bodied wine with sweet cherry flavors and good acidity. Nice quaffer and great with dry salami and provolone paninis on rosemary bread.

On a side note, the first bottle I opened last night was a Cab/Malbec blend from Patagonia (El Fin Del Mundo). I don't know if I'm growing more accustomed to the lighter styles of old world wines or what, but I couldn't even stomach the heavy-bodied, thick fruity style of this wine. This is normally a style of wine I love, but maybe I'm entering a new phase of wine appreciation. One that has eluded me for the past 9 years that I've been exploring the wine world.

Celler de Capcanes Mas Donis Montsant

Now that I've opened the door (and my mind) to Spanish wines again, I'm finding that more and more to like. For example: the Mas Donis is a blend of Grenache and Syrah from Montsant in northeast Spain. This is a beautifully balanced medium bodied wine full of dark fruit and velvety tannins. This is what I would call a luscious wine, easy to enjoy on its own or with grilled sausages, pork, or beef.

Hi Ron - I'm glad to be back in with the Spanish wines, too. It just gives us more variety in our daily wine options, especially since they are usually well within our budget.

Glad you're "back in" with Spanish wine Kim. Spanish wines are my favorite European wines(even before Portugal wines). Although, I didn't feel the Hecula as much as you did but I thought the 2006 was better than the 2005.

I enjoy the Temps and Grenaches! I had a Spanish Grenache a little while back and it was pretty good. A lot better on the second day. It went real well with BBQ and excellant with Portuguese cheese. The cheese brought out massive blueberry flavors. There is no mention of the name of the wine because I don't remember. lol

I'll see if I can find this one around here somewhere!

After having such a pleasant experience with that Monastrell at the restaurant the other night, I decided to peruse my own cellar to see what may be lurking there. What I found was a bottle of 2006 Bodega Enguera Dis-Tinto, an unusual blend of 50% Tempranillo and 50% Syrah that was delivered to us by our monthly wine club earlier in the year. The color was deep dark red, unlike the dark purples of the Petite Syrahs I've been drinking of late. Aroma wise, it was hard to distinguish at first. I thought I detected a bit of red licorice and cedar. On the palate the wine is rich and round with black cherry and floral notes, followed by a long, satisfying peppery finish. It paired very nicely with my tomato and Gruyere panini on rosemary bread. This may be a turning point for me and my relationship with Spanish wines. I'll have to dig through the cellar and see what else has been sitting there neglected!

Spain has such a variety of wines that all taste so unique from their regions. Again the price and taste of them keep me trying new ones. When in doubt buy a Spanish wine. I rarely am disappointed.
