It's good that this post has brought in a new participant, but alas, the original poster is just a paid shill for the winery mentioned. he or she came and posted some obvious lies here before about buying a case of the wine or something.

but hey, it's a good open question. I will always come to bat for Veuve Cliquot La Grand Dame champagne.

Hi, I´ve said it before and I will say it again. My number one favorite bubbles are Chauvignon Reserve, vintage 2001 from the boutique winery Sjoeblom Winery in Napa, California. You can check out their website at www.sjoeblom.com

The bottles are $39...I should give you a warning though. You might get addicted to them

I thought I would talk about "patronizing" and "condescending" since the poster has returned only to reiterate his low opinon on my attempted discussion of his free bottle of wine.

I don't think this poster knows what these terms mean, he just bandies them about. I have reposted my earlier reply with comments for the judgment of the readers.

I reply that "It is so weird that we read this or variations of this so often. You never read "I am very much into wine and someone gave me a rare and valuable bottle of wine"

I see no condescension. I comment on a statement and situation that I have seen numerous time. Plainly read, as it is plainly stated, I am talking about the frequency of occurence of situations similar to his, but not about the poster. That is offensive?

"Why don't people give 50 year old bottles of wine to someone who might care about them?" Possibly this can be seen as implying that the poster doesn't know enough to care about the bottle, but certainly the poster has said, 'I know nothing about the bottle'. Patronizing or recognition of reality? It is indeed a comment on the fact that I don't believe I have ever read 'i have been given a '45 Mouton. it is great that I received this wine which is etc etc.'

I go on to sya: "I'd like to ask, why were you, "a complete novice when it comes to wine" given this bottle?

Finally, I ask and state why I ask - 'I'd like to know' - why the poster received the bottle. i don't ask for justification. i don't imply there is something wrong with his ownership. for my own pleasure I say "I would like to know"

heavens! But what would one expect.

Subsequently the poster says "I'm happy to talk about it, that's why I posted my question on a public forum." of course the poster had not talked about the bottle yet, nor does he talk about it afterwards, but apparently at some time he will be happy to actually talk about the bottle of wine he was given.

Whatever makes you happy, although you seem to be most happy denigrating others.

I'm happy to talk about it, that's why I posted my question on a public forum. Your question about why I was given the bottle sounds incredibly condecending, as though you don't consider me worthy of owning it. The bottle does have provenance, by the way, back to the early 60's.

I expected advice when I posted the question, which I got from several other sources on this and another forum. I didn't expect to be patronised.

Well, sure it is. You made it my business by your own action and statements.

You came to a public place, said essentially 'Hey stranger, I have been given an item which has no connection to my life, about which I have no knowledge, and I do not have the ability to research this item on my own. Would you talk to me about it and give me the benefit of your expertise?"

Then, when I try to talk about it, you cop an attitude like I'm your paid consultant or something. Tell you what, instead of me making an offer to you for this bottle of wine whose provenance you refuse to disclose, you make me an offer of what you are willing to pay for the information you seek.

Here's some more free discussion - one cannot selll a fifty year old bottle of wine without disclosing provenance. Just can't sell that kind of pig in a poke.

So your premise is that you can say whatever you want, demand from me my expert opinion of your business, but I can't make reasonable inquiry about an interesting (and potentially telling as to the answer to your queries) aspect of your story because it is somehow only your right to ask questions?

Are you ashamed of have you acquired this bottle of wine? Seems like you are. As you say "It's a bottle of wine for god's sake." You introduced that bottle and your acquisition of same into a public forum. Did you expect no one would talk about it?.

The fact is that I have it, have no clue of it's worth or quality, and would appreciate some advice rather than a snooty, condecending question as to my suitability to be in posession of such an item. It's a bottle of wine for God's sake. If it's that important to you, and would make you feel better if such an undeserving novice such as myself were not graced with the ownership of such an item, make me an offer and I will willingly sell it to you.
