Wine California, USA  - California is the largest wine producer of any state in the USA. The wine growing regions of California include: Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Marin County, Santa Cruz,  San Luis Obispo / Paso Robles Santa Barbara,  Mendocino,  Sierra Foothills, Solano County, Central, Lodi and Woodbridge. Each year, California produces millions of liters of good quality table wines with a growing number producing high quality vintage wines. A wine tradition going back to the early 19th century, California has some of the oldest continuing vineyards in the country. Many historians generally agree that the first California vines were planted in 1769 at the Mission of San Diego de Alcala.

The best-known wine growing regions in California are the Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley along with the neighboring wine regions of Mendocino and Lake Counties. The Napa Valley wine region is located 50 miles north of San Francisco California, and is known around the world as the premium wine-growing region in North America. More than 500 wineries are located within Napa Valley, making this valley the most densely concentrated wine region in the world. Its Mediterranean climate and the skill of its winemakers contribute to its popularity for wine. In most parts, Napa Valley is only a few miles wide with low volcanic hills defining its sides.

Sonoma County is California’s second popular wine district. It includes an area about 35 miles long by 35 miles wide containing broad flat fields, gently rolling hills and parts of the adjacent Pacific Coast. Sonoma has over 300 wineries. The wine industry in Sonoma is generally on a smaller scale than that of the Napa wine region, with its top wine producers concentrating on producing prime grapes for the premium segment of the wine market. Sonoma’s climate is slightly cooler than that of Napa Valley, and it varies dramatically depending on the appellation. Offshore breezes and fogs keep temperatures cool for ocean-side vineyards.

Some of the other noteworthy wine areas in California are Mendocino, Monterey, Paso Robles, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara Valley, Lodi and Woodbridge. Many of the wine sites in California have a microclimate that distinguish them and favor specific wine grape varietals. For example, some of the best vineyard sites sit in valleys that provide cool, foggy ocean air or moderate temperatures. By and large the North and Central Coastal areas are where the vast majority of quality wine production is to be found. The Sierra foothills enjoy a cooler climate than much of the hot Central Valley, and is another area for premium quality wines.
