Burgundy creates some of the most exciting wines in the world. The Burgundy region produces two of the most popular wines in France: Beaujolais and Chablis. Burgundy boasts some of the oldest vines dating from the 500’s that were cultivated by monks. In fact the names of the religious orders became the names of some of France's most renowned wines: Chambertin, Santenay, Pommard, and Meursault. Surprisingly, the great vineyards are very small. Each property is made up of many little, detached parcels of land. Burgundy is one of the largest wine growing regions in France and, with the exception of Bordeaux, the most complex to understand. Burgundy has 3,500 properties that are responsible for two thirds of vines planted. The reds of Burgundy are made primarily from Pinot Noir grapes, except in Beaujolais and Macon in the southern part of Burgundy, where the Gamay wine grape is more popular. The best wines produced in Burgundy come from grapes grown in Grand Cru vineyards - the Tête de Cuvée. These top quality areas are found in Chablis and the Côte d'Or. There, and in the Côte Chalonnaise, you'll also find the Premier Cru vineyards, which are a grade below the Grand Cru areas, but are still very excellent wines. Reasonably priced and exceptional wines can be found from any area in Burgundy.

The Burgundy region begins a hundred kilometers south of Paris between Dijon and Lyon, and stretches 225 miles. Burgundy is a region with various soils, divided in numerous districts: Chablis, Côte d'Or (divided in Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune), Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais and Beaujolais.

Burgundy wines are of a velvety and subtle red or of a sensual and characteristic white. The main grapes in Burgundy are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The soils of Burgundy are Limestone, clay-limestone and marl. The weather of Burgundy is continental with cold winters and warm summers.
