The
WineWeb — Showcasing
Wine from Around the World
A Service of WineWeb Enterprises, Inc.
(Santa
Fe, NM, USA) The WineWeb
is a service that provides information on wineries and wines to
consumers. It houses the largest database of information on wineries
from all over the world. The WineWeb is envisioned to become the
first stop on the Internet for anyone looking for wine.
The
WineWeb is a service of WineWeb Enterprises, Inc., which was founded
in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1995 to provide Internet marketing
services to wineries. The WineWeb maintains an electronic marketplace
of over 32,000 wineries from over 50 countries around the world,
provides value-added services to wineries and wine merchants,
and provides a consumer-friendly method of integrating thousands
of wineries and wines into a searchable environment. All wineries
are allowed to update information on their winery, wines, vintages,
and shipping methods as part of the free service. Wine merchants/retailers
are able to load their product catalogs into the site so visitors
can find and buy their wines. The company was one of the first
commercial database-enabled Web sites and one of the first sites
dedicated to the wine industry.
The
WineWeb gives wineries and wine merchants many opportunities to
increase their on-line exposure, increase Web site traffic and
drive sales. The WineWeb has one of the most robust wine databases
on the Internet today, which brings value to both the wineries,
wine merchants, and consumers. A winery may use the WineWeb site
to supplement their existing web site with more information on
vintages, awards, news, and suppliers. In addition, wineries without
a web presence or a minimal site may elect to create or enhance
their Web presence utilizing the services available through The
WineWeb.
How
We Began
We had been
researching the feasibility of a service such as this since the
early 1990's, but until late 1994, could not find a suitable medium
for presenting the information. With the shift of the Internet
to a more commercial environment, and with the increased use of
the World Wide Web portion of the Internet, this service became
feasible. In early 1995, the concept was brought on-line with
a service allowing wineries to market their wines. We were one
of the first sites, and definitely the first wine site, to build
a database-enabled web site that hosted dynamic pages. Although
it seems commonplace now, the web environment back then was quite
primitive.
We have watched
as other wine sites came and went, several after making a splashy
entrance and a fiery exit. Through it all, The WineWeb has continued
to adapt to the changing environment, and continues to provide
a powerful database of information for the wine consumer.
Ongoing
Innovation
The
WineWeb
continues to enhance its Internet services to provide value and
appeal to a large number of wineries. Ron
Kreutzer, the President of WineWeb Enterprises, Inc., explained,
"We provide a very innovative and customizable method for any
winery in the world to showcase their products on the Internet."
A winery can leverage their existing investment in their web site
and provide links from The WineWeb into various places on their
web site. For wineries that have yet to establish a web site,
The WineWeb can function as their web presence, with information
provided on the winery, the wines, awards, ratings and shipping
information. A winery or wine merchant can choose to have the
WineWeb process orders for wines and can link to other order processing
services.
Consumer
Focused
The
WineWeb is a site focused on the wine consumer. Access to all
the information on this site is free to consumers -- always has
been and always will be.
