Cradled in a secluded natural amphitheater amid the Mayacamas Mountains, in a remote corner of California's Sonoma Valley, Carmenet Winerv pursues a vision - MOUNTAIN WINES FROM MOUNTAIN GRAPES - fragrant, densely hued, intensely flavored red wines that vividly recall the majesty of their rugged, spectacular origins.

Taking its place in the rich 100-year history of vineyards in these mountains, Carmenet Winery was founded in 1982 by the Chalone Wine Group with the acquisition of 280 acres of mountainous terrain including 45 acres of vineyard. Chalone winemaker Dick Graff had perceived the potential of this site to excel in producing Bordeaux-style blends and, working closely with founding Carmenet winemaker Jeff Baker, expanded existing vineyards to encompass four red Bordeaux varieties. Ledges of solid volcanic rock had to be literally dynamited out of the mountains to access the last remaining vineyard sites.

To reflect its Bordeaux inspiration, the winery was named Carmenet (Car-men-ay), an archaic French term for the family of grape varieties used in traditional Bordeaux blends. On a terrace blasted from the base of a mountain slope, a twin-turreted redwood winery was built in a unique and efficient circular design to harmonize with the surrounding scenery. Into the rock face behind the building, caves were carved out, making Carmenet the first new winery since the repeal of Prohibition to place its entire aging cellars underground. These underground caves provide optimum conditions for storing and aging fine wines.
