Tradition

Alexander Valley Vineyards is owned and operated by the Harry Wetzel family. Harry Wetzel II and his wife, Margaret, founded the wine estate. Hank Wetzel (Harry III) is general managing partner and winemaker. Katie Wetzel Murphy is general partner and sales and marketing director. Pete Opatz is Vineyard Manager.

When they began planting vineyards, son Hank concurrently developed a keen interest in winemaking and headed to the University of California at Davis. Upon graduation from the school of enology and viticulture in 1975, Hank designed and built the family winery and began the Wetzel winemaking tradition. All Wetzel family estate wines are grown and produced on the property.

History

In 1962 the Wetzel family purchased the estate from the heirs of Cyrus Alexander, the 19th century pioneer for whom the valley was named. They began planting vineyards in 1964. The earliest plantings, some of the first premium varietal vineyards in Sonoma County, were Cab
