The achievements of Leeuwin Estate and the Horgan family since the first plantings in 1975 are to say the least, quite remarkable.
To fully understand the situation, let us wind the clock back to 1972 when a famous California winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first visited the cattle farm in Margaret River which became Leeuwin Estate. So enraptured was Mondavi that he actually set about buying the place. This did not eventuate, but he was engaged as a consultant during the setup and first couple of vintages at Leeuwin. The fact that Leeuwin got it right so early on, must in some way be attributed to Mondavi.
Peter Forrestal has written, "two things stand out: firstly, the sheer quality of the wines and secondly, their consistency... Leeuwin Chardonnays retain their flavor and liveliness at a time when many Chardonnays have become tired."
Named 1996 International Winery of the year by Wine and Spirits magazine.
From holding open air concerts in their vineyards with world class musicians (London Philharmonic, Tom Jones, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Ray Charles) to making world class wines vintage after vintage, Leeuwin's self-proclaimed philosophy is the pursuit of excellence. No one would dispute that it has succeded in its aim.
