Goundrey Wines was first established at 'Windy Hill' in the early 1970's and was amongst the pioneer plantings of the Great Southern Region when it was first recognized for its viticultural potential. In 1988, the historic and picturesque river valley property, 'Langton', was purchased. The property was originally taken up by Sir Richard Spencer, in 1839, and a succession of prominent owners have created a colourful history and the ideal location for the Goundrey vineyards and winery.
Langton is situated close to Mt. Barker, an area well known for its cool climate. Typically long and mild ripening seasons from fruit set in November to harvest in March-April, allows for the development of rich flavour characteristics. The slopes of the Hay River Valley provide fertile soils of deep loam over clay, which retain moisture for long periods during the extended ripening season of summer, until grapes reach full maturity.
The Goundrey tradition began 25 years ago when the first plantings took place in the fertile ground of Mount Barker. The first vintage, which was produced in 1975, was a clear indication of the potential for both Mount Barker and Goundrey wines. Within 10 years, Goundrey had become a leader amongst the new wave of quality Western Australian wine producers. As the vines have matured and produced some of the best grapes in the world, Goundrey has been quietly winning awards all over Australia. The Goundrey 200 hectare river valley property 'Langton' is now the showpiece of the company.
